MY ROLES AND SERVICES
CONSULTANT PSYCHIATRIST, NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE
My job as an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist involves treating patients with any adult mental disorders in the community. This is a substantive and permanent post. As is normal for such a post, I also supervise and train junior doctors, and I am involved in developing the mental health service in the local area
My private practice is at the Anglo European Clinic, (AEC), a leading provider of fast track psychiatric treatments. We have consulting rooms in Southend on Sea and Harley Street.
I aim to offer the first appointment within two weeks, usually within 7 days.
Listening is key to being a good psychiatrist. It is important also to appreciate how different factors interact to cause mental disorders. Over the years I have developed an approach that is based, not on coming to a simple and simplified diagnosis, but on understanding each patient’s problems, how they may have come about and what treatment may work for the individual patient
ASSISTING OTHER MEDICAL PROFESSIONS
The mental capacity of a person requesting cosmetic surgery may be called into question. Providing an opinion in matters of this kind may also require a diagnosis to be made. This is just one example of many areas in which the service of a consultant psychiatrist may be utilised. The speed at which an opinion is provided is highly important in the private sector.
EXPERT WITNESS IN PSYCHIATRY
I am a member of the Expert Witness Institute. I do one large report a month on the average. I like to bring into my report everything that I have learned in psychiatry.
These are the three questions I must always ask myself in relation to my role as an expert witness.
Do I have the qualifications and experience to provide expert opinion on this matter?
Am I writing in a language that is understood by the people that the report is written for?
Can I defend my opinion if called upon to do so?
The majority of my reports are on civil matters such as personal injury cases. I also give opinion on criminal matters such as fitness to plead.

WORK INVOLVING THE MENTAL CAPACITY AND MENTAL HEALTH ACTS
My work in this area includes the assessment of mental capacity to make decisions in a wide range of areas. The Mental Capacity Act advises that the assessment of the mental capacity of a patient to make a decision is best carried out by the person involved in the decision. It is also advised that where the decision is complex, then a professional opinion such as that of a psychiatrist may be necessary.
GOVERNOR, MID & SOUTH ESSEX NHS TRUST
In September 2020 I was elected as a governor for the newly formed Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust (MSE). I am proud to represent the people of Southend on Sea. My tenure is 3 years. This is my first time in such a role. MSE is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country. I have worked in the NHS since 1997 as a doctor. I believe that my role in the Board of Governors will benefit from my experience as frontline staff.
